Computer Simulation of the High-Speed Water Flow in Multiple Columns

2005
The purpose of this paper is to study the effect on the fluid flow of the pressure at the inlet of multiple columns for pushing water into three parallel long ducts simulating the die used in the magnesium die-casting. We also investigate the effect of the outlet openings on the movement of the water level. We used a commercial code CFX in the numerical simulation. The parameters involved are the injecting speed at the inlet and the area of the outlet opening of each duct. We investigate the flow pattern and the penetration speed of the water front at each duct. These are assumed to be important in deciding the mechanical properties as well as the micro-structure of the final products in the die-casting process. In the experiment we use a piston-cylinder mechanism to generate a uniform fluid flow into the inlet chamber of a simple model. The piston injecting speed is monitored by a high speed camera and phenomenon in three columns is chaptered by a DV. We will compare the numerical and experimental results to justify our methods.
