The effect of cimetidine on the liver and pancreas blood flow in dogs.

1989
: In this experiment, the effect of cimetidine on the liver and pancreas blood flow was measured in seven dogs. The liver and pancreas blood flow of the dogs was measured by using a method for the clearance of the Xe133 from these organs after and before cimetidine was given. The results of our experiments show that cimetidine decreased liver blood flow until the 10th minute and the pancreas blood until the 30th minute. The blood flow in the liver and pancreas then returned to normal levels after an hour and half when cimetidine was given. No significant differences were found in the vital signs during the experiment. In the light of our results, we concluded that one of the reasons of toxic effects of cimetidine on the liver and pancreas may be due to a decrease of blood flow. We suggest that this effect might be selective and cimetidine should be used very carefully in the patients with liver and pancreas disease.
