AnEmpirical StudyofSysMLintheModeling ofEmbeddedSystems

2006
Thecomplexity increase andvariety ofequipments controlled byembedded computers generate theneedofa multidisciplinary approach fortheprocess ofdevelopment of thoseequipments, involving theareasofsoftware, mechanics, electric andelectronic engineering. Systemengineering uses different techniques toconcurrently integrate thesedifferent views. Inthis sense, itisbeing specified byOMG amodeling language, denominated SysML(System Modeling Language). It intends toinclude inasingle specification anintegrated viewof thesystem, one thatincludes hardware, software and electro-mechanics parts. Theobjective ofthis paperistodoan empirical evaluation ofthemodeling language SysML,inthe senseofidentifying itscapacities anditslimitations forthe modeling ofembedded systems. Forthatpurpose, anelectronic fuelinjection system developed byDepartment ofAutomation andSystems atouruniversity will beused. I.INTRODUCTION Duetothetechnological progress ofthesemiconductor industry, andconsequently thereduction ofprocessor costs, embedded systems wonspace inpractically allsegments of industrial andresidential products. Those improved products haveembedded software thatisresponsible fortheir operation andcontrol. Withtheincrease ofthecomplexity andvariety ofembedded systems applications, theneedfor multidisciplinar y collaboration appears inthedevelopment
