Recent advances in paediatric keratoplasty
2018
ABSTRACTIntroduction: Corneal opacities constitute one of the major causes of paediatric corneal blindness. Keratoplasty may be the treatment of choice for most of these disorders. Paediatric corneal transplantation poses various challenges.Areas covered: Success of paediatric keratoplasty needs dedicated team work. In recent past, there has been significant changes in the field of keratoplasty.Expert opinion: With newer lamellar techniques, graft survival has improved significantly. A team approach involving ophthalmologist, paediatrician, anaesthesiologist, and the patient’s family, is necessary to achieve optimal visual potential. Although paediatric penetrating keratoplasty is challenging, successful transplantation with good graft survival can be obtained. A better understanding of prognostic factors can possibly improve graft survival in the future.
