Papermaking ability of pulps

2003
Determination of the direct relationship between pulp fibres' properties and the characteristics of the final paper product obtained from them is of great importance in paper science and technology. Despite many investigations, it is still impossible to establish quantitatively the papermaking ability of pulp fibres using typical methods for pulp quality evaluation. According to the presented concept, the papermaking ability is not by far something uniform, that could be described by a group of specific factors. This ability changes in the individual stages of the technological process - from raw materials (wood) to finished paper products. Moreover, the parameters describing papermaking ability vary from stage to stage. Therefore, different parameters should be used for the description of papermaking ability of fibrous raw materials and e.g. - of beaten pulps. The proposed concept permits a better evaluation of the papermaking ability of pulp fibres, creating effective ways for controlling the flow of individual process stages.
