Effect of parathyroid extract on the oxidation in vitro of glucose and the production of 14CO2 by bone and kidney

1962
Abstract The production of 14 CO 2 from [ 14 C 6 ]glucose, [6- 14 C]glucose and [I- 14 C]glucose has been studied in tissue preparations from parathyroid extract-treated rabbits. Bone and kidney slices, but not muscle or liver tissue, from treated animals produced more 14 CO 2 than did controls. On a relative basis there was a greater conversion of the C-6 of glucose to CO 2 than there was of the C-1. The data suggest that the extra CO 2 was of Krebs' cycle origin and that parathyroid hormone may control the rate of entry of metabolites derived from glucose into the pathways of oxidative metabolism.
