When we talk about Shakespeare and race; when we talk about actors’ ethnicities; when we talk about casting policies that result in diverse casts; when we talk about how audiences, critics, producers, playwrights, and actors respond to integrated-cast productions, often (but not always) what we are really talking about is how people feel about interracial relationships; and often (but not always) we are talking in particular about how interracial couples are treated today: not interracial couples in Shakespeare, not interracial couples 400 years ago, interracial couples right here and right now.
