Application of mixture design to optimize organic composition of carbohydrate, protein, and lipid on dry anaerobic digestion of OFMSW: Aiming stability and efficiency

2021
Abstract Optimizing organic composition of carbohydrate, protein, and lipid is vital for improvement performance on dry AD of OFMSW. Mixture design was conducted to optimize organic composition on mesophilic batch AD considering the performance both in methane production and process stability. Results showed dry AD performance was limited by declining pH, TAN accumulation and the inefficiency of methane production for substrate with unbalanced organic composition. Furthermore, substrate with 32.8 %–43.6 % of carbohydrate, 17 %–31.6 % of protein, and 24.9 %–50.1 % of lipid could avoid these limitations. Organic composition drove the evolution of fermented bacteria and inhibitions from accumulated intermediate products, thus impacted the abundance of archaeal. According to the result of this study, it is possible to make early inhibition warning and practically tune the organic composition of OFMSW from various sources under an accurate method.
