Joining ZTA ceramics by using whiskers reinforced borosilicate glasses for high-temperature applications

2021
Abstract We put forward a novel strategy for joining zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramics using whiskers reinforced borosilicate glasses for high-temperature (HT) applications. Herein, the robust joining of ZTA ceramics by using B2O3-Al2O3-SiO2 (BAS) glasses as an interlayer was achieved in air at 1400 °C. The Al18B4O33 whiskers were generated in the joining seam during the joining process, thus strongly improving the HT strength. The flexural strength of the joint after the thermal cycle test at 1200 °C could still reach 84 % of that at room temperature (RT). The joining mechanism was mainly addressed from the perspective of the in-situ growth of whiskers.
