MOVING FORWARD BY LOOKING BACK: A "HISTORIC" EFFORT

The article reviews the growing civic phenomenon of tying historic preservation and well planned public transit to a city's ability to move forward, literally by looking back. The National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Federal Transit Administration teamed up to launch a study and subsequently a book, "The Returning City: Historic Preservation and Transit in the Age of Civic Revival", that compiles 13 case studies from cities of varying size to demonstrate and document how intertwining decisions about public transportation, development and historic preservation in fostering sustainability and civic pride. Among the cities chosen were: Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, San Diego, San Francisco Bay Area, and Arlington County, Virginia.
