Evolution of the actions of Latin American universities to move towards sustainability and the SDGs

2019
This chapter presents information on the evolution of Latin American (LA) universities in their efforts to integrate sustainability into their policies and dynamics by transforming their curricula, teaching practices and research and discusses the different strategies they are implementing to fulfil their commitments to the global agenda. Higher education helps shape the future by training future decision makers, professionals and citizens. The historical background of the integration of sustainability into Latin American and Caribbean higher education institutions is based on the broad tradition of environmental education in the region. In 2018, the Academy LA project incorporated new universities in Colombia and initiated processes in other Latin American countries. Specifically, in Peru, a new experience has begun at four universities: Cayetano Heredia, San Marcos, Nacional de Barrancas and San Martin de Porres. University networks, joining forces and sharing experiences and good practices are a good strategy that continues to consolidate amon.
