Association between HPV-related cancers and inflammatory bowel disease.

2018
e13576Background: Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), are likely to be at high risk of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection due to therapeutic immunosuppression and alterations in mucosal immunity; however, the association of IBD and HPV-related cancers has not been well established. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 2003-2014 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database. We compared patients with CD and UCwith a control group of patients with diverticulitis. Groups were matched by age, sex, race, and comorbidity (Elixhauser score) using propensity score matching. We then performed multivariate analysis to assess the odds of concurrently having HPV-related cancers among individuals with IBD. Results: Individuals with IBD were more likely to have HPV-related cancers when compared with individuals with diverticulitis; odds ratio, OR = 2.5; 95% CI, 2.1 to 2.8. Odds for the IBD group were highest for vulvar cancer (OR = 6.0) ...
