A LEARNING ISSUE-SELF DIRECTED LEARNING: THE TEACHER'S ROLE IN GIVING FEEDBACK AND EMPOWERING STUDENTS IN ONLINE CLASSES

The world is currently in the middle of a pandemic. As it affects every country in the world, the Indonesian government has tried to prevent the virus spread by instructing the social distancing and physical distancing in every social stages. To implement the ruling, the education department makes the decisions to impose online learning system, or as commonly called as Study from Home (SFH). This decision, which carried out in various educational stages, is one way to break the pandemic chain. This method fundamentally changed the learning process, in which it switches the "face-to-face" method to a completely internet-based learning. This learning method is not only asking students to study independently at home, but also pushed lecturers to make learning tutorials creatively and explore their roles in the self-directed learning process. Therefore, this article will discuss the learning process carried out in a virtual classroom. This research is a qualitative descriptive study, with the data collection carried out through a questionnaire via Google Forms and online interview documentation via social media. The study's result concluded that most of the lecturers tried to apply various feedback strategies such as student assessment, peer review, student self-reflection, virtual classroom discussions, subject evaluation questionnaires, or students interview. It also suggests that at least some feedback strategies can improve students and teachers' performance, both quantitatively (assessment of student assignments) and qualitatively in every learning and teaching situation.
