The article is dedicated to completion and workover fluids, namely brines without solid phase, which are used in oil and gas wells with abnormally high reservoir pressures. The author describes problems that arise with heavy brines: high cost, corrosiveness, thermal stability. The paper presents the basic components for preparation of brines with densities of 1350-1800 kg/m 3 , in particular, the basic pros and cons of each of the reagents. The article describes experience of bromides and formates application as components of completion and workover fluids and it is shown how Russian oil and gas service companies solved the problem of bromides and formates deficit. The paper considers the application of calcium nitrate for preparation of heavy weight brines that are used for work-over purposes in conditions of abnormally reservoir pressure. The article describes the technical characteristics of clear brine based on calcium nitrate and calcium chloride. The paper presents the data on density, viscosity, and crystallization temperatures depending on the ratio of Ca(NO 3 ) 2 /CaCl 2 in solution. The author discusses the properties of anhydrous calcium nitrate produced by Kirovo-Chepetskiy chemical plant and spheres of its practical application in oil and gas industry. He also shows one of the main product advantages - low content of ammonium nitrate that results in the reduction of corrosion activity and sets it apart of other analogs. The author provides lab comparison of corrosion activity of calcium nitrate solution produced by URALCHEM OJSC and foreign calcium nitrate solution with higher content of ammonium nitrate.
