The role of dimensional factors and absorption efficiency in laser surface hardening

Abstract Some specific factors of the laser hardening process which determine the components maintenance characteristics are discussed. The evaluation of the dimensional factor is given, which reflects the influence of the component thickness on the hardening process by the comparison of the temperature field of the semi-infinite body and the plate at different irradiation conditions. The role and influence of the different absorption coatings on the formation of the hardening layers are also discussed. Some data on wear resistance of the hardened materials are given as well as examples of laser technology application for hardening the components and tools from industry.
