Study of elastic scattering and reaction cross-section of (8.5 MeV/u)132Xe ions with lead target

2001
Abstract The technique of solid state nuclear track detection (SSNTD) has been applied to study the interactions of 8.5 MeV/u 132 Xe-ions with lead target. The target (thickness ≈ 1 mg/cm 2 ) was deposited on a polycarbonate track detector and the target-detector assembly was exposed to 132 Xe ions at normal incidence. The angular distributions for elastic scattering events have been obtained in 2 π -geometry. The elastic data has been used to determine the quarter-point angle, which is related to the reaction cross-section. The values of partial reaction cross-sections were obtained by directly counting the three- and four-prong events. The experimental total reaction cross-section is compared with the classical reaction cross-section in the sharp cut-off approximation. There is a good agreement among the total reaction cross-sections evaluated from the angular distribution of elastic events, summing-up of partial cross-section and theoretical models.
