In-Situ Observation of Slag Holdup in a Fixed Bed of SiC Particles Using High-Temperature X-ray Radiographic Technique

2021
X-ray radiographic technique was applied to investigate the slag holdup in a fixed bed of SiC particles (8 to 9 mm) in a graphite crucible at 1773 K. With increasing temperature, liquid slag droplets started to drip through the bottom holes of the graphite crucible at 1718 K. After holding the sample at 1773 K for 63 minutes, the dripping of the liquid slag stopped. The slag holdup was estimated to be 4.25 pct, which was very close to the CFD-DEM simulation result recently reported by Geleta et al.
