Systems analysis of Austria`s carbon cycle

The focus of this research project is on the major sources, sinks and fluxes of carbon dioxide and other carbon-relevant greenhouse gases within Austria. The objective of the project is twofold. It focuses on: (1) quantifying Austria`s past, present, and future natural and anthropogenic sources and sinks and, thus Austria`s net flux to or from the atmosphere versus time; and (2) assessing the major fluxes and, most important, their uncertainties within an holistic context by means of a computer simulation model. The outcome of the project will provide a scientific and holistic knowledge and information base that allows to assess, coordinate and harmonize prospective national political actions to mitigate climate change ranging from measures in regard to land use to measures that influence the use of carbon relevant products.
