Diagnosis and treatment of 11 cases of basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus

2019
Objective To study the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment, molecular pathology and prognosis of basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus (BSCCE). Methods The clinical data and survival follow-up data of 11 patients with BSCCE admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University from 2014 to 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. Results There were 8 males and 3 females in 11 BSCCE patients, aged 57 to 79 years, with an average of 68.5 years. Tumor location was upper esophagus in 1 case, middle esophagus in 9 cases and lower esophagus in 1 case. All the 11 patients were moderately or poorly differentiated, and the Ki-67 index was higher (Ki-67 > 80%) in most patients. Up to the deadline of follow-up, patients were followed up for 8 to 48 months. Seven patients survived and four died (survival time was 24 to 48 months). Conclusions BSCCE is a malignant and aggressive tumor, and most patients have a lower degree of differentiation and poor prognoses. Preoperative diagnosis of BSCCE is difficult, and the best treatment plan is to be confirmed by further research.
