Wonders will never cease: Celebrating engineers Australia's centenary in 2019 by publishing 100 stories of Australian engineering

2015
Engineers Australia will celebrate its centenary in 2019. One of the contributions that Engineering Heritage Australia (EHA) will make to the event will be publishing 100 stories about Australian engineering. There is an obvious connection between a centenary and a selection of 100 items but the challenge has been choosing those 100 items. A sub-committee of EHA has considered a number of approaches to the project. The key decision was that the stories would be chosen on the basis of their impact on and appeal to the broadest possible audience: for engineers, they would be a reminder of the significant contributions of the profession; for the wider community, they would help explain the role engineers have played and continue to play in society. There will be no attempt to provide a comprehensive history of engineering in this country or to cover every aspect of the profession. The emphasis will be on finding 100 really good stories which reveal how engineers went about their task of finding solutions to challenging problems. They will be chosen from all periods of our country's history up to and including current fields of research and development. This paper will describe the development of the communication strategy and assessment process and reveal the first draft list of 100 stories along with examples of how they might be told.
