Water Quality Assessment of Brahma Sarover, Sannihit Sarover and Saraswati Tirth

2021
Water is a vital naturally existing resource because existence of living organisms depends on water. Total amount of water on the earth is approximately 1.4 billion km3 out of which saline water is 97% and freshwater is 3%. These days, water is polluted due to rapid industrialization, urbanization, use of pesticides and fertilizers and wastewater disposal. Usage of polluted water cause waterborne diseases in humans, so availability of good quality water is an essential requirement for the prevention of diseases. Almost all lakes and Sarovers in India are adversely affected by water pollution. The main adverse effects of water pollution are the death of aquatic organisms, waterborne diseases, eutrophication, bioaccumulation of contaminants, etc. The issue of water pollution is a serious cause of concern in the whole world. In India also, it is becoming a serious problem. The main objective of the present study was to assess status of water quality in three Sarovers, namely Brahma Sarover and Sannihit Sarover in Kurukshetra and Saraswati Tirth in Pehowa. Water samples were collected from three Sarovers and analysed for pH, total dissolved solids, turbidity DO, BOD and total suspended solids during 15 March 2019–30 June 2019. The results indicated that values of pH, total dissolved solids, turbidity, DO, BOD, total suspended solids were 7.14–9.41, 100–290 mg/l, 1.09–4.92 NTU, 2.9–5.8 mg/l, 2.0–4.0 mg/l, 40–150 mg/l, respectively, for East Brahma Sarover and 7.24–9.89, 90–260 mg/l, 1.85–7.5 NTU, 3.0–5.2 mg/l, 2.0–4.0 mg/l, 30–90 mg/l, respectively, for West Brahma Sarover. The resulted value of pH, DO, BOD, turbidity, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids were 6.62–9.41, 2.5–4.0 mg/l, 2.0–6.0 mg/l, 2.21–6.61 NTU, 40–140 mg/l, 80–260 mg/l, respectively, for Sannihit Sarover and 6.8–9.7, 2.1–3.35 mg/l, 3.0–8.0 mg/l, 1.33–8.94 NTU, 50–180 mg/l, 210–530 mg/l, respectively, for Saraswati Tirth.
