Controlling switching of display of vehicle surroundings

2004
A device for improving the visibility from a motor vehicle comprises an infrared (IR) radiation source 2, irradiating the surroundings of the car or automobile, an infrared camera 3 for capturing images from around the vehicle, an image display 4 and controller 1, operating to switch the display on or off as a function of collected image data. That is, the display is activated or deactivated according to the image itself, e.g. dependant on the image brightness or contrast. Image evaluation unit 6 may assess image data regarding the profile or shape, and condition, of the road or underlying surface; image evaluation may also be done regarding weather - for example, fog or snow detection - and traffic volume. The display may be switched off gradually or suddenly. The vehicle driver may be warned that the display will be switched off via a displayed signal. A rain, velocity or anti dazzle sensor may also control the display.
