Human papillomavirus infection a favorable prognostic factor in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma is associated with the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen

Objective:�Ithasbeendocumentedthathumanpapillomavirus�(HPV)�DNAreplicationrequiresproliferating� cellnuclearantigen�(PCNA).�Howevertheassociationbetweenthemintumorsisstillcontroversial.�Upto� now,�theroleofHPVinlaryngealsquamouscellcarcinoma�(LSCC)�hasnotbeenclearlyestablished,�andthe� correlationbetweenHPVandPCNAinLSCCremainspoorlyexplored. Methods: Weretrospectivelyreviewedtheclinicopathologicalfeaturesandfollow-updataof�71�patients� withLSCC.�ThelesionswereexaminedforPCNAusingimmunohistochemistry,�andforHPVusinginsitu� hybridization.� Results:�31�(43.7%)�casesshowedinfectionofHPVand�38�(53.5%)�showedoverexpressionofPCNA.�No� significantdifferenceofHPVstatusinclinicopathologicalfeatureswasfound.�Whiletherewasasignificant� differenceofPCNAexpressioninhistologygradebutnosignificantdifferenceofPCNAexpressioninother� clinicopathologicalfeaturescouldbedetected,�andtheexpressionofPCNAisnotasignificantpredictor� ofsurvivalinLSCCpatients.�However,�HPVinfectionisafavorableprognosticfactorinLSCCpatients.� Moreover,�HPVinfectionisassociatedwithPCNAoverexpression. Conclusion:�Humanpapillomavirus�(HPV)�infectionisanindicatorofbetterprognosisinLSCCandassociated� withtheexpressionofPCNA.�
