Inteligencia emocional como mediadora en la relación entre autoconcepto de género y satisfacción con la vida

The connection between emotional intelligence, gender and the cognitive component of subjective well-being has been studied. However, it is not clear what kind of relationship has been established between these variables. Adolescence can be an important period in the formation of identity that forms the gendered self-concept, so we consider that it can be particularly informative in the study of the cognitive component of subjective well-being. Thus, the objective of this study was to examine the direct and indirect effects of emotional intelligence in the relationship between gendered self-concept and the cognitive component of subjective well-being in adolescents. The participants were 365 schoolchildren, with a mean age of 13.9. The instruments used were the Spanish version of GRI-JUG (GRI-JUG-SP15) for gendered self-concept, TMMS-24 for emotional intelligence and SWLS for satisfaction with life. A mediation analysis was carried out using emotional intelligence as mediator in order to find out the effects on satisfaction with life. The findings yielded that emotional intelligence significantly mediated the relationship between gendered self-concept and satisfaction with life. Self-attribution of positive masculine and positive feminine attributes increases satisfaction with life through greater Clarity and Reparation. This can be considered as a confirmation of the androgyny hypothesis. Clarity and Reparation can be considered as more important than Attention in the promotion of satisfaction with life. Adolescents programs for increasing emotional intelligence and subjective well-being should pay attention to gendered self-concept.
