Vasopressin receptors mediate the cellular actions of arginine vasopressin (AVP), also known as antidiuretic hormone or ADH, in many tissues. The main endocrine functions of AVP are the facilitation of water reabsorption by the kidney (V2 vasopressin receptors) and the contraction of smooth muscle cells in arteries (V1a vasopressin receptors).
