Coatings for strain compliance in plastic packages: Opportunities and realities☆

Abstract The mechanical factors important in the design of polymer coatings for strain compliance in molded plastic packages are considered. Influence of the key variables is investigated using the analytical modeling technique of finite element analysis, verified in part by direct strain measurement. Results indicate important potential performance and reliability trade-offs of elastic modulus, adhesion and film thickness depending on the configurational aspects of the application.
