Wideband Design of C-shape Microstrip Antenna Using Rectangular Slot

Novel compact design of C-shape microstrip antenna with rectangular slot along the C-shape patch length is proposed. Second order TM 20 mode is reduced in its frequency due to rectangular slot and because of optimum separation with reference to TM 10 mode, yields wide band characteristics in C-shape patch. The compact design offers bandwidth of 70 MHz (> 8%) and exhibits pattern maxima in broadside direction with peak gain of 7 dBi. Formulation in resonating length for modes in C-shape patch with slot is presented. It gives closer prediction with the simulated frequencies. To validate formulations, methodology to design C-shape antenna with slot is presented at different frequency which shows similar wideband characteristics. Thus compact design of C-shape patch with slot supported by its detailed study to highlight resonant mode based antenna functioning along with resonant length formulation followed by design procedure, are all the novelties in the present paper.
