A preliminary look at control augmented dynamic response of structures

Th is r e p o r t deals w i t h t h e augmentation o f s t r u c t u r a l c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s , mass, damping, and s t i f f n e s s through t h e use o f c o n t r o l theory i n l i e u o f s t r u c t u r a l redesign o r augmentation. Treated f i r s t i s the s tandard single-degree-of-freedom system fo l lowed by a t reatment o f t h e same system us ing c o n t r o l augmentation. The system i s extended t o e l a s t i c s t r u c t u r e us ing s i n g l e and mu l t i sensor approaches and concludes w i t h a b r i e f d i scuss ion o f p o t e n t i a l a p p l i c a t i o n t o l a r g e o r b i t i n g space s t r u c t u r e s .
