Ontwerpen waar je bij staat : DualDesign - vormgeving en gebruiksscenario's
2010
DualDesign facilitates a user to work quickly and easy within 3D environments and it
eases cooperation between several users. The system is based on two screens, one of
them provides a 2D view and the other one provides a 3D view. There are different user
scenarios possible, which means it can be used for different purposes. At the start of this
project a technical proof of principle of DualDesign is available. In this proof of principle
one user scenario is elaborated. It supports the arrangement of (the) different objects in
a room.
The system works as follows. The user sees two screens, the computer screen in front of
him showing a 3D environment and the screen in the table before the computer screen
showing a working area. On this area the user draws the plan of the room he wants to
furnish and subsequently he places the furniture and other objects in the desired
position. The room and furnishing are visible in 3D in real time on the computer screen.
The communication between the user and the PC is made possible by the use of infrared
signals in the pen the user uses to draw. The working area is projected from the
underside on a plate by using a beamer and a mirror (to change the direction of the
projection). The point of view in the 3D representation is determined by a accessory
(called the point of view) that can be placed on the 2D screen.
The/My assignment starts at this point. The goals are:
1. The design of a prototype of DualDesign
2. The design of the additional parts which are necessary to use DualDesign
3. To come up with and to elaborate new user scenarios
This report describes the product, the design steps towards the designs and some new
user scenarios.
The first part of this report describe the steps taken to create a presentable and
workable prototype. To achieve this an overview of requirements is created, taking into
account that the final use of the product it is not clear yet.. So the requirement is to
create a design that fits in the VR lab, which is where this prototype will be placed. The
most important requirements are that the prototype is fully functional and that the
same functional parts as used in the proof of principle will be used.
The second part includes the design of the pen, the point of view and the mirror
standard. The main areas of focus in the design of the pen and the point of view are the
usability and the that fact that the design fits in the system. The focus by designing the
mirror standard was on the adjustability of the system, so that it is possible to set the
angle of reflection within a range of some degrees. The last part is the development of some new user scenarios and their elaboration . In
order to do so, a brainstorm with a team of designers was organised. The results of this
phase are:
• Team sports: The coach uses the 2D representation to create the game situation
he wants to explain, the team members see this situation in a 3D represtation.
This provides a clear overview of the situation.
• Buying a car: The (potential) buyers of a new care are able to choose between the
car´s options and extras completely as they desire. DualDesign ensures that the
car is easy to assemble and it promotes the cooperation between several buyers.
• Urban Planning: Urban Planning designs can be put in their future
environment, using the pictures of Google streetview. This makes it possible to
evaluate the design sketches or drawings early in the development process.
• Virtual Shop: DualDesign has the opportunity to make virtual shopping more
equal to shopping in the real world. The user can walk through the shop and the
2D screen creates a good overview over the chosen shelf.
• Film sets: The two screens of DualDesign allow the user to make a fast sketch of
a film set, including lighting and the location of sound equipment. The film set
and the effects of the lighting are visual on the 3D screen.
• Virtual (time) travelling: The user is able to navigate himself through a
landscape or town from somewhere else or from the past. The 2D screen is a
navigation palette with a map en by moving the cursor within the map the 3D
image of this area is visible on a screen around the user. For exaple, this can be
used in an exhibition.
