Design of Typing Skills Feedback System for Behavior Change

2020
It is important for teachers to understand the abilities of students and provide effective instruction to each of them. However, it is difficult to provide all students with appropriate instruction according to their individual abilities within the limited class hours. In this study, we proposed a system for supporting effective instruction to students and focused on evaluation of typing skills as an example of its application. The proposed system automatically evaluates students’ typing skills and provides them feedback. Two types of feedback are designed based on the behavior change framework called Persuasive Systems Design and encourage students to spontaneously improve their typing skills. In the evaluation experiment, we provided students feedback to evaluate changes in their typing skills and investigated what feedback encourages behavior change. Analyzing the changes in students’ typing skills, we found that the feedback that effectively encouraged behavior change varied according to students’ abilities.
