Practical Approach for Psophometric Noise Measurement in DC/DC Converters

2020
In the current paper the term psophometric noise refers to audible ripple in the output of DC/DC converters and more specifically in DC/DC converters part of the output stages of telecom rectifiers. Although psophometric noise in telecom rectifiers is a dated parameter, it still remains as a set value in standards and device specifications, making it a requirement for marketable products. Therefore, the paper suggests a practical approach for measurement of psophometric noise. The approach utilizes easily available measurement devices with logging capability and external computer based digital processing in order to evaluate the noise. This allows for a simplified and accessible solution that can be used during design and prototyping stages, negating the need of acquiring specialized psophometric meters. The suggested approach offers relatively high accuracy – depending on the input device, and complies with some of the recommendation for standardized psophometric noise measurement.
