An unfinished mid-thirteenth-century 'Virgin and Child' from Saint-Germain-des-Prés

2019
A sculpture of the Virgin and Child excavated in Paris in 1999 is probably a discarded first version of the trumeau figures from the portal of the lost Lady Chapel of Saint-Germain-des-Pres. It is evidence that this vanished group, here dated to 1245-47, represented a key development in Gothic sculpture.
