Bacterial contamination of deep venous catheters of different sites and catheter-related infections

2013
OBJECTIVE To investigate the correlation between the bacterial contamination of deep venous catheter of different sites and the catheter-related infections so as to reduce the incidence of the deep venous catheter-related infections.METHODS A total of 84 patients, who underwent the deep venous catheterization in the general surgery department from Apr 2011 to Jan 2012,were enrolled in the study.According to the different sites of the deep venous catheter, the internal jugular vein and subclavian vein catheter patients were set as the group A,the femoral vein catheter patients were set as the group B with 42 cases in each. The bacteriological monitoring was performed for the two groups respectively at one day, three days, seven days, and ten days after the catheterization.RESULTS The positive rates of the bacterial culture at one day, three days, seven days, and ten days after the catheterization were 0%,0%,4.76%,and 2.38%,respectively in the group A and were 2.38%,16.67%,7.14%,and 0%,respectively in the group B;the difference in the positive rate of bacterial culture on the third day was statistically significant(P0.05).CONCLUSION The catheter-related infections after the deep venous catheterization is related to the catheter location, thus it is necessary to standardize the related operations so as to reduce the incidence of the infections.
