Liquid scintillator core fibers with polymer claddings

1992
Flexible liquid scintillator core optical fibers designed to be an alternative to plastic scintillating fibers, especially in forward scintillating fiber calorimetry, are described. The liquid scintillator fiber light-guides use polymer tubing claddings to contain a liquid scintillator core, adapted from liquid core lightguides. Light yields and attenuation lengths are suitable for high-energy calorimeters. About 200 liquid fibers were manufactured in a 40 cm length and installed in a Pb block 12 cm*12 cm*22 cm deep to make a test electromagnetic calorimeter with a 11% core packing fraction. >
