An uncommon case of peritonitis: appendicitis should not be overlooked.

2007
Peritonitis remains the most common complication in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD); it is generally benign and can be successfully treated by specific intraperitoneal (IP) antibiotic therapy. In some cases, peritonitis is resistant to IP antibiotics and abdominal pathology should be suspected. It is often necessary to perform a surgical investigation to determine the possible presence of severe lesions, such as intestinal perforations, or sclerosing peritonitis (1). In the present study, we report an uncommon case of peritonitis that developed in a patient on continuous ambulatory PD (CAPD) and that, following investigation, was subsequently diagnosed as appendicitis.
