Comparison of BURP maneuver with modified bi-manual laryngoscopy in improvement of laryngeal view during direct laryngoscopy after induction of general anesthesia

Objective: To compare BURP maneuver with modified bimanual laryngoscopy in improvement of laryngeal view during direct laryngoscopy. Methodology: Direct laryngoscopies were performed in patients scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia. Laryngoscopic view was assessed by Cormack Lehane grading. The BURP maneuver and modified bimanual laryngoscopy were applied in Grade II, III and IV patients. Grade I patients were excluded from the study. The improvement in laryngoscopic view was assessed by the laryngoscopist. Results: Total of 326 laryngoscopies were performed. Grade 1 patients were 226, Grade II 88 Grade III 12 and Grade IV were 0. In group A BURP maneuver was performed and laryngeal view improved in 29 patients out of 50 (58%). In group B modified bimanual laryngoscopies were performed and laryngeal view improved in 43 patients out 50 (86%). CONCLUSION: The modified bimanual laryngoscopy was better than BURP maneuver in improvement of laryngeal view during direct laryngoscopy.
