A CASE OF ESOPHAGEAL CYST

1992
A case of esophageal cyst in the left upper mediastinum was reported. A 53-year-old woman was referred to the hospital with an abnormal mass shadow on a chest X-ray film. She had no subjective symptoms, and physical examination revealed no abnormal findings. Contrast computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the cystic lesion in the mediastinum. Thoracotomy was performed under a suspicion of bronchogenic cyst. A 5×6×3 cm tumor was successfully removed. There was no connection to the esophagus, trachea and bronchus. The cyst was unilocular. Histologically, its cyst wall was lined with ciliated columnar and partially stratified squamous epithelium, and composed of double muscular layers without cartilage. The tumor was diagnosed as esophageal cyst.
