Design and Improvement of Anti-Bird Devices for Transmission Line Towers

2020
With the improvement of the ecological environment, transmission line failures caused by bird activities occur from time to time especially in the spring, which have become one of the main threats to the operational safety of transmission lines. In order to avoid this kind of transmission line failure, different types of anti-bird devices including anti-bird cage, man-made nest, and anti-bird thorn are installed on the import parts of transmission line towers which are seriously affected by bird activities. However, because the anti-bird devices are mostly produced and installed manually, there are many gaps between devices and towers after installation, which make these devices not very effective. In this paper, first, a variable-angle anti-bird cage is designed to effectively eliminate the error gap between device and tower on the side. Furthermore, by modeling for middle-phase angle steel of tower, the problem of sealing between two middle-phase anti-bird cages is solved. Second, because the existing man-made nest is so large and heavy that it is difficult to bring to the transmission line tower, a kind of folding man-made nest is designed to facilitate the installation. Finally, enlightened by the structure and the close mechanism of umbrella, an inverted umbrella-shaped retractable anti-bird thorn is designed to facilitate the installation and to reduce the impact of anti-bird thorn on operation and maintenance of the transmission line.
