The invention provides a self-shunt excitation system based on a converter. The self-shunt excitation system comprises a three single-phase H-bridge-type converter, an isolation level and an excitation coil. The three single-phase H-bridge-type converter comprises three single-phase converters, wherein the input terminals A, B and C of the three single-phase H-bridge-type converter are directly connected with the terminal of a synchronous generator; the output terminals of the three single-phase H-bridge-type converter are connected with the input terminals of the isolation level; and the other port of the isolation level is connected with the excitation coil. The three single-phase H-bridge-type converter which is simple in structure and simple in control strategy is utilized, and the self-shunt excitation system is suitable for high-voltage high-power application occasions, so that an excitation transformer at the high-voltage alternating current side can be omitted, an electric power system is provided with positive damping through direct current excitation and controlling AC side reactive power, low-frequency/ultralow-frequency oscillation of the electrical power system is effectively suppressed, and stability of the electrical power system is improved.
