Problem-based learning in cybersecurity at CCCU

This work looks at the development of two problem-based learning scenarios. The first of these exercises involved the investigation of social engineering and the second concentrated on the Government’s Cyber Essentials scheme. The problem-based learning was tested over a three-week period, with a two-hour tutor facilitated session every week. For each scenario the students were supplied with a 20-page case study for which they needed to provide their solutions. Students worked in groups of three or four to produce a 20-minute presentation (with speaker notes) by the end of the second week. The third session was used to provide feedback to and evaluation by the students. This presentation will discuss the detail of the scenarios, issues with the running of problem-based learning of this format, the student reactions and evaluations, the quality of the work produced by the students and finally discuss how the PBL approach utilised in teaching cybersecurity can be applied to teaching computer forensics.
