Diagnosis, Prevention, and Management of Venous Thromboembolism in the Adolescent Female

2020
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) has a bimodal distribution in the pediatric population and most frequently occurs in neonates and adolescents. Adolescent females have unique risk factors for venous thromboembolism which often occurs in the extremities, lungs, and cerebral sinus venous system in these patients. Diagnosis and evaluation of venous thromboembolism in adolescent females depends on the clinical presentation and location of clot. Treatment typically involves anticoagulation and long-term sequelae include recurrent thrombosis and post-thrombotic syndrome.
