Fulminant hepatic failure complicating exertional heatstroke with rhabdomyolysis

1993
Objective: To report the association of fulminant hepatic failure with exertional heatstroke. Design: A single patient case report. Setting: District general hospital and regional teaching hospital liver unit. Patient: A previously healthy 25-year-old man. Interventions: Supportive therapy. Outcome measures: Clinical and biochemical parameters during illness and post-mortem pathological findings. Results: Patient died 5 days after presentation with exertional heatstroke from the complications of acute renal failure and acute hepatic failure, the latter unrecognized until the terminal stages. Conclusion: Liver in jury is a common accompaniment of exertional heatstroke; fulminant hepatic failure is a rare complication
