The Rhine Meuse delta: an aspired UNESCO Global Geopark

The international geological and geomorphological value of the Rhine Meuse delta is unmistakeably high, and hence we push the Rhine-Meuse delta as a geopark and aspire UNESCO Global Geopark status for it. With the status of Global Geopark, the initiative aims at increasing the value of the different aspects of the delta, not in the least a mental shift with visitors towards (dealing with) climatic change. With this we also aim to establish a new and future-proof tourism and leisure industry in the area, that connects to the landscape, nature and cultural legacy of the area. Just as well we aim to increase public involvement with protecting the environment and knowing about and carrying out the global significance of the Rhine-Meuse Delta. For the Dutch professional community on river engineering and geomorphology, the geopark would be a next platform helping to build out international visibility of their scientific research and leadership in knowledge development on river deltas worldwide. A growing movement of local organisations, entrepreneurs, government divisions and many others is already making effort in establishing such communication results.
