Spin-glass-like behaviour of manganese-based amorphous Mn × X alloys (X 3d, 4d, 5d metals) and its dependence on the MnMn interatomic spacing

Abstract The magnetic properties of manganese-based binary amorphous MnX alloys have been investigated for the non-magnetic elements X3d, 4d, 5d metals. In all the alloys except MnY and MnLa the magnetization increases monotonically with decreasing temperature and indicates an effective moment for manganese in the range 0.5–1.8 μg per manganese atom. From a plot of the effective paramagnetic moment p eff vs . the average MnMn interatomic distance D nn we find that spin-glass-like behaviour occurs for p eff ⩾ 1 μ B and D nn ⩾ 3.0 A .
