Dilation or dilatation: To be or not to be?

Article history: Received 30 June 2015 Accepted 30 June 2015 Available online 3 July 2015 dilatatand the corresponding noun dilatatio; from this comes the English word dilatation [10]. But -tion is a live suffix in English, and there is no reason why it should not be added to the English verb dilate to give dilation [10]. This was done, for example, with impersonate, to give impersonation. The difference here is that there is a Latin model available, and this fact should weigh with anyone who cares about the way English words often preserve some of their history in their form:
