Nanocarrier drugs for eye treatment
2021
Abstract Recent advancements in the field of eye treatment include nano eye drops. These eye drops come under the category of ophthalmic eye treatment, and they ensure the increased potential of treating eyes with much fewer side effects. With eye drops that are used conventionally, the compounds inside these drops will have fewer chances to penetrate the inside of the eye. This is because of the presence of the cornea, which is located at the eye surface. The cornea creates a hindrance and barely allows the infiltration of these eye drops into the eye. The cornea prevents against any hydrophilic or large foreign particles from outside. This chapter deals with the use of nano eye drops to treat glaucoma by a commercially available drug that uses brinzolamide as a nanomaterial in the eye drops. Even though the commercially available drugs are effective, the anterior segment of the eye systems is still prone to diseases or disorders, as these systems are less efficacious. The diseases/disorders in the anterior segments of the eye can be treated by recent advancements that have taken place in ocular drug delivery systems through nanotechnology and molecular biology. In order to overcome impediments during the treatment of these ocular muscles in the eye, nanomaterial-based eye drops or injectable solutions are made. When nanoparticles are included in the drugs, then properties such as better immunogenicity, nonspecific toxicity, biorecognition, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics can be achieved relatively easier.
