Metabolic syndrome: Protective potentials of dietary phenolic acids

2019
Abstract Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of physiological and metabolic disorder characterized by increased waist circumference, fasting glycemia, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and hypertension. It is a global challenge, and it accounts for increasing death cases. Dietary phenolic acids offer prospects for the management of metabolic syndrome and its components, as they form components of daily diet intake in some rural setup, and it is perceived to be responsible for their healthy state. The phenolic acids in these functional foods confer their several physiological activities. While there are several reports on the protective influence of phenolic acids in the literature, few have led to drug discovery. This chapter provides the mechanistic details on the protective potentials of phenolic acid in the management of metabolic syndrome.
