Stabilization of Power System by Virtual Inertia Control of Adjustable Speed Synchronous Condenser

2021
In recent years, renewable energy has attracted attention as a measure against global environmental problems, and along with that, the penetration of inverter based power sources has been increasing. However, since there is no inertial force in the inverter based power supply, if the penetration is expanded, the inertial force of the entire power system will decrease and thus the stability may decrease. Therefore, a new virtual inertia control method using an adjustable speed synchronous condenser (ASSC) is proposed in this paper. The proposed virtual inertia control method, which is designed based on the Fuzzy Logic theory can contribute to prevent the decrease of the inertial force of the power system. It can improve the stability of the power system when the Squirrel Cage Induction Generator (SCIG) based Wind Farm (WF) trips. Performance of the proposed system is evaluated by using a model system consisting of conventional Synchronous Generators (SGs), ASSC and WF. From the analysis results, it can be confirmed that the proposed method improves the stability of the system.
