A liquid crystal layer (32) for a liquid crystal shutter (10) according to an embodiment of the present invention is a TN type liquid crystal layer that includes nematic liquid crystal material having positive dielectric anisotropy, and the nematic liquid crystal material has a chiral pitch of less than approximately four times the thickness of the liquid crystal layer. A circuit (40) is constituted such that a drive voltage is applied to a first electrode (14) and a second electrode (24) such that a first voltage (V H ) that puts the liquid crystal shutter (10) into a closed state, a second voltage (V 0 ) that puts the liquid crystal shutter (10) into an open state, and a third voltage (V L ) having an absolute value that is smaller than the absolute value of the first voltage (V H ) and larger than the absolute value of the second voltage (V 0 ) are applied to the liquid crystal layer (32). The voltages are supplied such that, the third voltage (V L ) is applied to the liquid crystal layer (32) after the first voltage (V H ) has been applied to the liquid crystal layer (32) and before the second voltage (V 0 ) is applied to the liquid crystal layer (32).
