Hábitos de alimentación e índice de masa corporal (IMC) de acuerdo al tiempo en sobriedad de la población alcohólica en recuperación de Cartago, Costa Rica

Background: The existence of complex relationships between habitual alcohol intake and nutritional status has been described and it is pointed out that excessive consumption can seriously interfere with the drinker, either by an alteration in food intake and absorption or use of the nutrients. Objective: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the feeding habits and body mass index (BMI) according to the time in sobriety of the alcoholic population recovering from Cartago. Materials and method: This is a cross-sectional correlational study, in which 106 recovering alcoholics participated, to whom a questionnaire based on eating habits and lifestyle was applied, and their BMI was determined. Results: On average, the participants were overweight according to their BMI and, according to the survey, they had regular eating habits and it was determined that both the nutritional status according to the BMI and the eating habits varied according to the time of sobriety of the population. Conclusions: it is necessary to carry out more studies that allow describing the alimentary behavior of the population once they have abandoned a drink.
